<\/a>I had the privilege of playing for Coach Dauterive in his first years of Head Coaching at Our Lady of Fatima in Lafayette. We knew he was innovative. We knew he knew his stuff and was good. We were, as yet, too young to know how good he was. Coach compiled a 72.8% record of 228-85-1 over a 45 year career. Far more significant than a win-loss statistic is the influence he had on the lives of young men under his tutelage with whom he was as caring as if they were his own sons, even to the extent that it would get him in hot water with those more interested in appearances than straight talk.<\/p>\n
There was a poignant film released in 2008 called\u00a0Walking on Dead Fish<\/em> featuring Coach Dauterive and his team at East Saint John in LaPlace<\/span>. It is a touching piece full of the emotions of young athletes thrown together in a mix & match, make-do season following the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina on players’ families, league schedules, uniforms, college plans and individual hopes and dreams.<\/p>\n Throughout the movie a supporting element is Coach being “Coach Doe” including a scene near the end after a heartbreaking loss. Coach D falls to the ground from the emotion of the play followed by a swift kick in the ribs by his dear wife Kay, reminding him to get up, to show his players proper dignity.<\/p>\n Coach<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> seems to keep up-to-date with his many adopted sons, able to share bits about them and is full of recognition when any extends a hand in greeting. Coach Dauterive and Kay even attend our class’<\/span> reunions, sharing good times, tall tales and much love. As a personal example, it was he who first informed me of my sister Mary Cavell<\/a>‘s 2010 induction into the Hall as long-time coach at E.D. White H.S.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n Coach Dauterive started head coaching at Fatima. He also coached at Louisiana Tech University and with the British Columbia Lions of the Canadian Football League. But he enjoyed most teaching and grooming young men of high school age, He shared his talents at Opelousas, East St. John, Opelousas Catholic, East Ascension, Riverside and Winnfield.
